Narrow nationalism is blinding us to universal injustice

Narrow nationalism is blinding us to universal injustice

Re: “Myanmar ambassador silent on Rakhine atrocity – just like his boss”, Have Your Say, April 26.

I totally agree with Andy Leitner that it’s disgusting that the ambassador from Myanmar would write a letter playing the role of victim without expressing one word of remorse about the horrible atrocities his country committed against the Rohingya.
Yet, Leitner, an Israeli, concludes his letter complaining about how everyone is critical of Israel, while he himself shows no remorse about the atrocities that Israel commits against Palestinians and the Lebanese.
Why can’t we behave like civilised human beings and condemn ALL injustice regardless of whether or not the murderers come from the same religious, racial or national background as we do?
Why should that make any difference to people who are genuinely compassionate?
