Without rule of law, there is no point in voting

Without rule of law, there is no point in voting

Re: “Nazis could have saved the UK”, Have Your Say, May 23.

I see Mr Wilcox once more has trouble identifying the enemy. Starting with the wrong opinion that the latest coup was a necessity, he goes on to wander farther from the truth. Plenty of countries experience political problems, including the UK and the US, which are both immersed in awful troubles at present. However the chance of the military intervening in these and other troubled nations is nil. Why? Because these countries enjoy the high level of social equality and rule of law on which a democracy is founded. Thailand’s people are not socially equal, hence justice is not always delivered and laws are bypassed when the superior class feels the need. That the NCPO “established some law and order” is of course a fallacy. The junta has created even more inequality with its laws, especially those designed to repress and silence criticism and dissent. Such laws are solely for their own protection, not for the good of the population, and they have also placed a small minority of uniformed pensioners in vital institutions to ensure only they win.
Mr Wilcox is correct in stating there is no point in voting, since a small group of geriatric men can come along and instantly undo everything that the people voted for. Yes, democracy is built on the rule of law, but only where every citizen is equal – something not likely to happen in a country where uniformed rulers refuse to be judged.
