Thai beaches should have lifeguards – but not to save drowning people

Thai beaches should have lifeguards – but not to save drowning people

I understand where Nigel Pike is coming from in his letter “Posting a lifeguard for idiots is not worth it” (June 22-23), but I think there is a more important point to be made.

The fact is that too few people in Thailand know how to swim or, at the very least, tread water to save their lives.
A good start might be to encourage the development of lifesaving clubs, as they have in Australia, where young people are encouraged to learn how to swim and how to assist others. It is also great exercise and a rewarding social experience.
