Corruption versus Democracy: Let’s heal the US divide

Corruption versus Democracy: Let’s heal the US divide

The fight between Corruption and Democracy has shifted focus from Thailand to the United States. The presidential campaign and turmoil on American streets in the wake of Donald Trump’s victory are giving Corruption fresh ammunition in his relentless push for a truce with Democracy. “Admit me as part of your whole and everyone will live happily ever after,” Corruption has been saying.

Badly weakened and barely remembering who he is, Democracy feels his will to fight is diminishing dangerously.

Democracy (sighing): This is where you say “I told you so”. Go on, say it.
Corruption: I’m not that cheap. And if you think Donald Trump is a proof, you’re dead wrong. Everything and everyone before him have confirmed my point. You are a corrupt system pretending not to know it. And don’t give me the “At least people can choose” nonsense. Check out the US opinion polls. A lot of voters said they didn’t have a choice.
Democracy (to himself rather than his opponent): What’s happening?
Corruption: How much time do you have? First, the two parties always think about winning. They don’t really think about the people. Second, Obama failed to get the banks. Third, Clinton promised voters everything that her party had already had eight years to deliver, but failed to do so while Obama was in power. In other words, the sweeter her promises, the more solidly the nails were rammed into her coffin. Fourth, like everywhere else on earth, Trump played the sincere “bad boy” and America turned into a virgin touched for the very first time by a tempting Mr Wrong. Make no mistake, though: his kind of self-presentation will get old in a hurry, since plenty of copycats will now come out of the woodwork. But if you’ll allow me to make a prediction, it’s more likely that he will be swallowed up by the mainstream.
Democracy: You are talking about his victory speech?
Corruption: Of course. What a gentleman. Very non-Trump, wasn’t it? Hillary was also very gracious. This is a major flaw in your system, pal. You make everything look more like a game. Candidates accuse each other of having the potential to start a religious war or even a world war, or of being a proven crook – and then smile and shake hands at the end. This can’t be real.
Democracy: Don’t you like it? After all, you’ve been saying we are two halves of the same person.
Corruption: I like the fact that democracy is corrupt. I don’t like the fact that people like you never admit it. This is why I have been calling for a pact. You are not holier than anyone, not in your present state at least. Embrace me and lower the people’s expectations. You will morph from an ideal into something real.
Democracy: If I embrace you, how can I be holy? My existence depends on collective efforts to be holier and holier.
Corruption: You stopped being holy when the Soviet Union lost its grip. Without a mega-opponent, you got cocky and assumed you had a licence to do just about anything. Your feet were no longer on the ground and you warded off every criticism by romanticising the power of the ballot box. What’s occurring is that your proclaimed “collective will” only happens on election days, while the rest of the year is for crooks laughing their way to the bank.
Democracy (again, murmuring to himself): Trump can still come good.
Corruption: You know what? The protests against the election result in America are not just an anti-Trump message. They reflect the frustration of people who feel let down by a system they have been encouraged to cherish since the day they were born.
Democracy: You sound like you care very much about me.
Corruption: I do, but in a way you won’t appreciate, because you remain idealistic. America is outgrowing you, in fact. Trump’s triumph, if you look at it carefully, is America accepting that you and me can go hand in hand, as long as nobody pretends.
Democracy: You are saying that America is accepting you? What about the other half, who can’t stand all that Trump represents?
Corruption: Hello? Trump won democratically. You are talking as though only one half of the divide is democratic. Both he and Hillary are products of you, remember? Your system demands that Trump be unconditionally welcomed. There’s a problem only because your system, idealistically speaking, should have done better, whereas it can’t realistically.
Democracy (to himself, for the umpteenth time): I don’t know what’s real anymore.
Corruption: You are ambivalent, confused and resigned because of your self-denial. You think you’re holy. You think you are the best. It’s a surefire way to fail. And when you have no competition it’s a death sentence. Unless you have an ally like me, of course. Join me and experience the real omnipresence, my friend. Moreover, you will be doing your poster-boy America a great favour. Its people don’t have to be divided like this.
And the World, Heaven and Hell continue to hold their breath...
