BEC and AAT to Host FB Battery River Kwai Half Marathon

BEC-Tero Entertainment and the Athletic Association of Thailand (AAT) will stage the half marathon FB Battery River Kwai Half Marathon Thailand Championship 2016 on October 16 in Muang district, Kanchanaburi.

The tournament which features royal-sponsored trophies will take place on the province routes highlighted by the Kwai River bridge which is the most important historical symbol in Kanchanaburi.

Certified by the Asian Athletics Association and supported by  Kanchanaburi state agencies and the State Railway of Thailand, the event features three running events: the half marathon (21.1 km) with a registration fee of Bt620, the mini-marathon (10.5 km) with a registration fee of Bt420, and the fun run (5 km) with a registration fee of Bt420.

All runners will receive running jerseys with numbered bibs and medals after completing the event. The winners of the men’s and women’s half marathon events will receive trophies sponsored by His Majesty the King.

Two national Olympic marathoners Boonthueng Srisang and Natthaya Thanaronnawat will also be joining the event.

 

“This is a very special event. The winners of the men’s and women’s half marathon events will each receive royally-sponsored trophies. The marathon is being held for the first time by the Athletic Association of Thailand, so all asepcts will meet international standards. Therefore, we would like to invite as many people as possible to join this activity,” AAT President Pol. Gen. Sant Sarutanond said.

Kanchanaburi governor Mr. Sak Somboonto said of the event: “On behalf of Kanchanaburi province, it is an honour to co-organise this half marathon. The event will help promote our province’s tourism as the route is surrounded by beautiful scenery and the significant point is the Bridge on the River Kwai - the province's most important historical symbol. Both private and state sectors, such as hotels and restaurants are 100% ready to do their best to welcome all runners who will join the event on 16 October.”

SRT Governor Mr. Wuthichart Kalyanamitr spoke about the re-surfacing of the River Kwai bridge: “The SRT has proceeded with re-paving the surface on the bridge. Our engineers have overseen the process and we’ve also built handrails at some points of the bridge to ensure the safety of all runners.”

Thai marathoner Boonthueng Srisang had a message for runners. He said “I would like to invite all runners to join this event. Not only do we have a chance to exercise but we also have a chance to appreciate the scenery of Kanchanaburi. The history surrounding the location makes this an event not to be missed.”
