Late start shall benefit Thai Fed Cup Team: Tammy

Thai Fed Cup captain Tamarine Tanasugarn viewed that a late start for Thailand in the competition programme on Thursday would give her side an opportunity to study the play between host Kazakhstan and South Korea in the Fed Cup Zone Asia/Oceania Qualifying Group I tie in Astana.

Thailand which is in group A along with Kazakhstan and South Korea will open their campaign against South Korea on February 9 before a date with the top seed Kazakhstan on February 10. The host and South Korea will play on Wednesday.

“This should be our advantage as we can observe their games first. South Korea has solid singles players while Kazakhstan has a top 40 player (Yulia Putintseva). But she (Yulia) just finished her tournament in Russia and might get tired from that. We will see if she will recover this week,” said Tamarine, the former top 20 player in the world.

The Thai skipper supervised training session in Indoor hard-court at the Dualet National Tennis Centre while the temperature outside was at -40 degree. The Thai players focused on movement and groundtsrokes hitting and also practiced in the gym.

“We have a light training on Monday to allow players to get used to the surface. They used to play here before so I’m not worried about that. On Tuesday we will make them compete on a set basis,” Tamarine said.
