Luksika keeps Thai flags flying at Australian Open

Luksika Kumkhum’s run in the Australian Open continued as the Thai qualifier upset former world No 8 Belinda Bencic of Switzerland 6-1 6-3 in the women’s singles second round on Wednesday.

Luksika, who never before moved beyond a Grand Slam second round, unleashed 30 winners to topple the 78th ranked Swiss in just 68 minutes inside the Hisense Arena at the Melbourne Park.

“I’m really happy to reach the third round in a Grand Slam for the first time,” said the 124th-ranked Luksika whose previous record in a Major was two back-to-back second round berths in Melbourne between 2013-2014.

“I kept telling my family, my coach and friends that I would reach the third round in a Grand Slam. I did it today,” added Luksika during an on-court interview. “Thanks for support from Thai fans and Aussie fans. I  hope to do well in the next round.”

Luksika will face either world No 43 Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania or No 89 Petra Martic of Croatia or in the third round on Friday.
