Team-spirited Korrakot happy to sit out Asians Cup
Thailand defender Korrakot Wiriyaudomsiri insists he doesn’t feel aggrieved that the return of Theerathon Bunmathan may deprive him of a starting spot at the AFC Asian Cup which starts in the United Arab Emirates on Saturday.
The 30-year-old Korrakot filled in at left-back for the AFF Suzuki Cup last month while Theerathon was busy playing for Vissel Kobe in the J-League.
However, the vice-captain is back to resume his duty in the continental event so Korrakot will probably have to settle for a place on the bench.
“I look at this as being positive for the team,” said the Buriram United player, who has 10 caps. “The coach [Milovan Rajevac] has more options at left back.”
Korrakot also views that Theerathon is a valuable asset for the team due to his versatility.
“Theerathon is a talented player. And tactically he is very useful as he can play midfield as well,” added Korrakot who has often played alongside Theerathon during training sessions in Abu Dhabi.
“So he has my support … or it would be even better if we could play together.”
Thailand have three more days to prepare for their first Group A game against India on Sunday.
“The training has been focusing more on tactics,” said Korrakot. “We are practising both defence and attack, trying to work together as a teamwork. I believe we will be 100 per cent by the first game.”
Meanwhile Thai FA chief Somyot Poompanmoung insisted that his staff provide best convenience for the team so that they are fresh and fully ready for the Cup.
“Our main concern is the players and coaching team must eat and sleep well. We make sure that they spend as less time as possible to travel between the hotel and the pitch as they need enough rest,” Somyot said.
He also expressed his gratitude for Viphawan Benniman, Charge d’Affaires at the Embassy of Thailand in the UAE, for the hospitality they have provided during their stay in the UAE.
