Promising starts by Thais

Two Thai players fired under-par rounds on day one of the 100th New Zealand Open in Queenstown yesterday – but were still several shots off the pace.

After turning in 37, Thailand’s Panuphol Pittayarat made his move by sinking six birdies in his back-nine to sign for a four-under 67 and grab a share of
fifth place at the prestigious event that is co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and the PGA Tour of Australasia.

Jazz Janewattananond, who leads the current Asian Tour standings, carded a 69 at The Hills to be in a tie for 25th.

Asian Tour rookie Zach Murray got off to a flying start, signing for a flawless eight-under-par 63 to grab a one-shot lead over Japan’s Ryuko Tokimatsu and
Harry Bateman of New Zealand.
