The Ministry of Electric Power (MOEP) announced on August 30 that electricity bills will be increased, from the previous maximum of 125 kyats to 300 kyats for household use and from the previous maximum of 180 kyats to 500 kyats for commercial use starting September 1.

The country needs to produce additional capacity of 4,000-5,000 megawatt of power as more than 24 million people have no access to electricity, said Khin Maung Soe, Union minister for electric power at a meeting with local people in Mongshu in Shan state
