Bangkokians mark Makha Bucha with alms to 66 monks, prayers to 99 Buddha relics

The Culture Ministry hosted a ceremony to offer alms to 66 monks on the Lan Khon Muang grounds opposite Bangkok’s City Hall to mark Makha Bucha Day on Monday.

Culture Minister Ittipol Khunpluem presided over the ceremony with Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt in attendance.

Also participating were locals and officials from the ministry’s Department of Religious Affairs and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.

Apart from giving alms, the event also featured prayers, sermons and contests for the best dharma lecture.

Devotees also got to pay respect to 99 Buddha relics as well as the relics of the 19th Supreme Patriarch Somdet Phra Sangharaja Chao Krommaluang Vajirañāṇasaṃvara.

Makha Bucha is celebrated on the full moon day of the third lunar month. It marks a gathering Buddha held with 1,250 of his disciples, signifying the creation of the Buddhist Sangha.
