Phuket continues to draw Russian tourists, investors

MONDAY, JULY 31, 2023

Russian tourists are increasingly flocking to Phuket, and have now taken over the top spot amongst visitors to the island from the Chinese.

n the first half of 2003, the number of Russian tourists visiting Thailand increased by a staggering 1,000% compared to the same period last year. Additionally, many Russians have been investing in Thailand, particularly in real estate, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

Purchases of villas have risen by 338% this year alone, more than half of them snapped up by Russians. This trend has resulted in the opening of many Russian-friendly establishments, such as Russian-style bathhouses ("banyas") and restaurants serving traditional Russian dishes like borscht soup alongside Thai cuisine, the Phuket Tourist Association reports.

The local airport and businesses have also adapted, with signs and announcements now made in the Russian language, and the availability of Russian-friendly services and amenities has increased.

The shift in focus to Russian tourists and investors in Thailand came about as a consequence of the strained relationship between Russia and Europe and the US, which led to restrictions on Russians' use of Visa and Mastercard credit cards in some Western countries. As a result, many Russians turned to alternative payment methods, such as China's UnionPay platform, converting money into digital assets, or using US dollars and euros for financial transactions.

The open visa programme has also played a significant role in attracting Russian tourists and investors. This programme allows for longer stays in Thailand for those with special skills or investment interests, enticing Russian individuals and families, including those who have fled from Ukraine.

Overall, Phuket has become a Russian paradise, with its beaches, nightlife, and friendly atmosphere attracting a growing number of Russian tourists and investors alike.
