Pai, the backpacker’s haven in Mae Hong Son, goes Jamaican this winter with the Pai Reggae Festival taking place on December 14 and 15. From midday to midnight, the rice fields will be transformed into an open-air stage and dance floor as local and international reggae musicians play the beats of the Caribbean. Pai is easily accessible by bus from Chiang Mai.

In full bloom

Dasada, a flower gallery in Nakhon Nayok, is hosting “Once Flower Upon A Time” exhibition from now until February 19. Billed as the largest-ever flower exhibition by Dasada itself, the showcase celebrates the spirit of winter with colourful blooms varying from roses and orchids to fancy chilli. Made with the family in mind, the flower show comes in different shapes and colours and its whales made of flowers are guaranteed to delight the little ones.

Mantra gets a makeover

Mantra Samui Resort will be reopening early next year following extensive renovations to its lofty lobby, spa and infinity pool with a panoramic view of the Gulf of Thailand. The resort appeals to guests with a high vertical garden that references the island’s natural beauty. Indigenous trees and plants frame the road to the hotel, and a water feature adds a new dimension to the lush surrounds. The hotel also harvests more rainwater for filtration and reuse, and uses more of its grey water for irrigation and gardening. “With such extensive changes throughout the property, we almost feel like a brand new hotel,” says Akira Park, the hotel’s general manager.

Bursting with flavour

Kanchanaburi on the border with Myanmar is well known for its Death Railway and Bridge over the River Kwai, but this weekend it’s drawing on fine food, flavours and folk music for a festival that promises to be as interesting as it is delicious. Taking place at the city’s riverfront from Friday to Sunday, it features grilled catfish with bitter and sweet young neem leaves, roasted chicken and much, much more.
