Supporters of General Prayut Chan-o-cha may say they want the former Army chief to be the force that keeps Thaksin Shinawatra at a distance regardless of the methods employed. Meanwhile admirers of Thaksin claim that the tycoon and former PM personifies democracy that truly benefits the rural poor.
Both men – whether they realise it or not – are not what their supporters claim them to be. Instead, they are the forces that make true democracy in Thailand just an illusion.
Hence, it would be best for the country’s democratic future if the two men both agreed to quit politics at the same time – preferably now.
