SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2023

In a bid to curb the unauthorised sale of kratom and marijuana, Chiang Rai authorities raided a shop in Muang district at 1 am on Saturday.

Upon arrival, officials found approximately 80 youths, aged 25 or younger, sitting together and enjoying kratom-infused drinks.

Among them was a 12-year-old girl, which highlighted concerns about young people being served by such establishments.

Four modified motorcycles were also found parked in front of the shop, indicating a potential link to the unauthorised activities inside.

Initial investigation found that the seller did not have the necessary distribution licences to sell marijuana. Investigators also found drug consumption equipment on the premises.

Legal action has been initiated against the shop’s supervisor for violating various laws, while action will also be taken against the owners of the modified vehicles.

The officials pulled aside 20 youths under the age of 18 to find out how they had learned of the shop and how it was able to service them after hours. The authorities will provide information to the youths’ parents.

Meanwhile, the working committee in charge of the operation has proposed that the shop be shut down and has called on provincial authorities to address regulatory violations and safeguard the well-being of local youth.
