Inflation eases in January

Thailand's consumer price index increased by only 3.38 per cent year on year in January, reflecting increases in fuel and consumer goods prices, according to the Commerce Ministry.

The inflation also edged up only 0.39 per cent from December as consumer goods prices dropped. The prices spiked up significantly during November and December due to huge demand during the floods.

Yanyong Phuangrach, permanent-secretary to the ministry, said Thai inflation should show steady growth this year. While economic growth would push up demand, but goods prices should be quite stable, he said.

The ministry expects annual inflation at 3.3-3.8 percent this year.
