At the meeting today, policy makers concluded that no measures are necessary for the time being.
Attending the meeting were Deputy Prime Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong, Bank of Thailand Chairman Virabongsa Ramangkura, the National Economic and Social Development Board Secretary General Arkhom Termpittayapaisith, the Budget Bureau's chief, and the government's secretary general Ampon Kittiampon. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra also showed up unexpectedly for the meeting at the Government House.
Arkhom noted that as some 10 per cent of Thai exports was destined to Europe, some impacts are anticipated. Still, there is no need for any remedial measures.
The Commerce Ministry still believed that Thailand's exports would expand by 15 per cent this year. The Bank of Thailand recently revised down the export growth target from 9 per cent to 8 per cent, due to the euro zone crisis.
Arkhom noted that the NESDB still maintains the economic growth target of 5.5-6.5 per cent for this year, thanks mainly to domestic consumption and investment.
