The project has been progressing slowly, as it is 10 times the size of Thailand’s own Map Ta Phut industrial complex in Rayong province. The Dawei project will be developed on 200 square kilometres. Total investment is expected to be at least US$8.6 billion (Bt270 billion).
“I have assigned the Fiscal Policy Office to find ways to push the Dawei project ahead by discussing with [ITD] whatever difficulties it faces,” Areepong said, adding that it should become clear soon what help the Thai government could offer.
He said the government was keen on seeing the project succeed, as it would be beneficial to the country’s overall economy, providing a new gateway to the Indian Ocean.
Both the Thai and Myanmar governments agree that progress on the project should be increased soon for the sake of both nations.
The Thai government is constructing a 95-kilometre road from Bang Bua Thong to Kanchanaburi to link with the Myanmar border near Dawei.
