Flagship phone out with 4G networks

LG has launched its latest flagship smart phone, the Optimus G, in South Korea, with Japan to follow next month, then the US and other markets with long-term evolution (LTE fourth-generation) networks.

“The LG Optimus G … is not just a communication device but also a device to enhance users’ daily life,” Jong-seok Park, president and chief executive officer of LG Electronics Mobile Communications, said in Seoul yesterday.
The Optimus G is aimed at accelerating the positioning of LG in the worldwide smart-phone market.
It has 2G, 3G and 4G capabilities as well as cross-tasking, which allows users to operate various applications at the same time without having to compromise other tasks. For example, users can have two full screens of applications overlapping. They do not need to leave one screen for the other. They can use a slide bar to adjust the transparency of the two screens.
Kenneth Hong, director of LG Global Communications, said LG’s sales target this year was 10 million smart phones in the Korean market and 80 million units, including smart phones and feature phones, around the world.
About 35 million of these 80 million units are smart phones that are expected to be sold by year-end.
“The LG Optimus G is one of our flagship products that will help us achieve the goal in the smart-phone market. This model is targeted at the high-end mass market for smart phones,” he said.
Park said the Optimus G was powered by a quad-core processor, the Snapdragon S4 Pro, and ran on the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system.
It is the first quad-core smart phone with LTE connectivity.
The highlight is dual screen, dual play, which allows users not only to mirror between the smart phone and a TV, but also to display different content on each screen wirelessly.
Its camera is a huge improvement from the previous model with 13 megapixels – 8 megapixels in the rear and 1.3 in front. It can film at 4.7-inch WXGA (wide extended graphics array) True HD IPS (in-plane switching), with 1280x768 pixels and a 15:9 wide-screen ratio.
