NBTC to review its stance on libel suit

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) will consider on September 18 whether the libel suit against an academic and a TV journalist should be filed by individual commissioners or by the organisation.
Commissioners Prawit Leesatapornwongsa and Supinya Klangnarong proposed that the board make the decision. They reasoned that the four members of the telecom committee filed the libel suit. However, a statement - indicating that the libel suit was to protect the NBTC's integrity - was issued on behalf of the NBTC as a whole, though the issue has never been reviewed by all commissioners.
The libel lawsuit was filed against Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) researcher Deunden Nikomborirak and TPBS's Nattha Komolvadhin. Discussing the contents of the 1800MHz mobile phone contract on a TV programme, both were charged of defaming the four commissioners.
