Export target maintained at 5%: TNSC

Thai National Shipper's Council (TNSC) maintains the 2014 export target at 5 per cent, despite political jitters.

Nopporn Thepsitthar, chairman of the exporters club, said that the political situation in the past 3 months has had no effect on exports. He added that orders have been awarded to Thai exporters. Though official documents and the transportation can be delayed due to the "Bangkok shutdown", export activities are being continued normally thanks to the reliable supply chain in the country.
He implied that the current crisis would be like the ones before, which slightly affect the overall economy. At this point, exporters are carrying out normal operations, regardless of political situation.
Meanwhile, the weakening baht, which may fall to as low as 36 per dollar, will be beneficial for exporters. The export sector, which accounts for up to 70 per cent of Thailand's GDP, is believed to push the GDP this year by 2-3 per cent, he said.
Yet, he admitted that the export growth forecast does not take into account volatility of the global economy, particularly in the US economy.
