Register pre-paid SIMs

The Cabinet yesterday approved a regulation requiring all mobile phone users to register their pre-paid SIM cards by July 31. Otherwise, they would be unable to make calls.

Unregistered pre-paid SIM cards will be useless after the deadline, except for receiving calls and making emergency calls to national police and hospitals.
Those who use a free Wi-Fi service to access the Internet via mobile phones will also be required to register.
More than 90 million pre-paid SIM cards have not yet been registered. The regulation was issued by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission as a way of deterring crime in general, including criminal defamation by netizens and social media users.
