Fierce rivalry takes toll on MCOT results

MCOT's financial results for the first quarter will be below the company's expectations as a result of intense competition in the TV broadcasting industry, according to the head of the state media enterprise.

Director-general Sivaporn Chomsuvarn yesterday declined to provide details, but described the results as unsatisfactory and below his estimation.
The declining ratings at MCOT’s Modernine TV, which was last month ranked sixth by Nielsen (Thailand), have already hit bottom, he said, adding, “What we have to do [first] is maintain our position, and [then] make it better”.
The bourse-listed state enterprise has set aside about Bt500 million, largely for programme production and acquiring foreign content for Modernine TV, while the rest will be for its family channel.
“With this new programme line-up at Modernine TV, we hope to see an improvement after its TV ratings dropped significantly since digital-TV broadcasting service was launched last year,” he said.
MCOT expects to generate revenue of Bt4.5 billion this year, representing thin annual growth.
