Marketing plans to be proposed for 12 sectors

THE International Trade Promotion Department will this week propose a priority marketing plan for 12 industries to ensure the Commerce Ministry sees export growth of 1.2 per cent this year as targeted.

Director-general Nuntawan Sakuntanaga said the department would propose urgent measures for approval by Commerce Minister General Chatchai Sarikulya based on the requests from exporters.
After brainstorming with 12 export sectors, the ministry found there was a need for government assistance on business matching and other major strategies to help them penetrate overseas markets more effectively.
Overseas missions led by senior Commerce officials or even the minister himself will give exporters from various sectors a chance to meet with government agencies and major importers in targeted markets so they will have connections for future contracts.
For the automobile and parts industries, the department will set up priority missions to Latin America next month, and to selected African countries in July and August.
Exporters of jewellery and ornaments have called for more trading activities in China, South Korea, Europe, Russia and the Middle East. The furniture industry wants missions to Asean, Japan and the Middle East.
Kitchenware exporters are eyeing Asean, the Middle East and South Korea.
Service industries such as construction want to penetrate India, where there is high demand for infrastructure |development. In the healthcare and cosmetics sector, exporters would like to do more business in Asean and Eastern Europe.
In the food and agriculture sector, exporters have urged the government to help solve trade obstructions as a priority. They also complain that they face high costs of production and shortages of raw materials.
