The store, selling more than 12,000 product lines, will support growth stimulated by the forthcoming Asean Economic Community, the company hopes.
“Tesco Lotus is opening the new store in Sangkha to service a growing border community,” said the retail giant’s corporate affairs director, Salinla Seehaphan.
“The opening of the AEC will stimulate trade, with more Cambodians crossing the border to do their shopping. The new Sangkha store will appeal to both Thais and Cambodians |for getting quality products at good prices and as a one-stop shop.
“We are confident the new store will support the economic and social development of Sangkha and southern Surin. We have created more than 200 new jobs and additional employment at local shops leasing [space in] our shopping mall.
Area set aside for SMEs
“We have also opened an area in the store for local [small and medium-sized enterprises] to display their products, and we are a distribution channel for Thai growers.
“Tesco Lotus is also focused on developing local communities with part-time work for youngsters, as well as environmental and health projects.”
The opening of Tesco Lotus’ Sangkha store follows the government’s policy of making cross-border trade more efficient and increasing the potential of border towns.
To celebrate the grand opening of the store yesterday, Tesco Lotus is donating Bt100,000 in scholarships to pupils in the Sangkha Municipality.
Customer donations to a collection box opened after 12 months will help disadvantaged students at Sangkha Withayakhom School.
The store will also have a community aerobics area, and has planted many new trees in a green area in front of the store.
“Tesco Lotus is confident that consumers in Sangkha and Surin will benefit from the new store. Besides [offering] a comprehensive range of quality products at reasonable prices, the store will increase the liveliness of cross-border trade, to deliver sustainable economic benefits to the community,” Salinla said.
