The ratings of Channel 7, Channel 3, Workpoint TV and Channel 8 came from the latest data of Nielsen, said an analyst at KKTrade Securities, a member of the Kiatnakin Phatra Financial Group.
Analog TV channels such as Channel 3, MCOT’s Modernine TV and the Army’s TV 5 anticipated better ratings due to the SEA Games.
Adding to that momentum, Channel 3 saw a 10-per-cent rise in ratings from the same month last year while TV5 experienced a 45-per-cent rise and Modernine TV saw a 30-per-cent surge.
The analyst said the sporting event had only a short-term impact on those channels’ popularity.
To keep up the momentum, MCOT president Sivaporn Chomsuwan said his company would focus on partnerships with leading content owners like Nation Broadcasting Corp (NBC), TrueVisions and JSL Global Media.
On Thursday, MCOT will announce a partnership with TV production house JSL Global Media to launch a new programme called “Perspective”.
Last week, the state-owned media enterprise also partnered with TrueVisions – the country’s leading subscription-based TV operator – to telecast 17 free-view matches during the Thai Premier League’s 2015 season, which starts this month.
TrueVisions is the holder of the Thai soccer league’s broadcasting rights. The company also announced the revival of its partnership with NBC – a subsidiary of the Nation Multimedia Group – under which it will jointly produce a news talk show called “Ying Tok, Kanok Sak”, co-hosted by outspoken TV food presenter and veteran chef Yingsak Jonglertjesdawong and TV anchor Kanok Ratwongsakul from Nation TV.
The show will start next month on Modernine TV.
However, leading digital channels are planning to add more new content, particularly entertainment programmes, to retain their viewer base and increase advertising revenue.
Workpoint Entertainment, which runs Workpoint TV, will prepare 10 new drama series for the second half of the year and next year. Having the new entertainment shows, Vichanee Srisawat, chief marketing officer of Workpoint Entertainment, said her company targeted Bt1.8 billion in revenue.
BEC-Multimedia, which runs 3SD channel, will add more Asian series. BEC-Multimedia is an affiliate of Bangkok Entertainment Co, the operator of Channel 3.
Ong-art Singlumpong, executive vice president of Channel 8, said his company would spend Bt300 million to Bt400 million on 10 new drama shows for the second half of the year. His company will also partner with leading content providers like Kantana Group and JSL Global Media to co-produce TV series.
