New terminal for Seletar Airport
SINGAPORE is set to construct another passenger terminal at Seletar Airport by the end of 2018 to serve the overflow from Changi Airport and enhance overall aviation capacity.
Kevin Shum, director-general of the Civil Aviation Authority, said yesterday that the building would be at the eastern side of Seletar Airport – the second civilian airport of Singapore.
A tender was called on Wednesday and construction is expected to begin in October.
The new terminal will provide improved facilities and amenities that will enable Seletar Airport to accommodate growth of traffic.
As part of Seletar Aerospace Park, it will also support growing general aviation activities and enhance the airport’s offering as a private and efficient business aviation gateway to Singapore.
Seletar is a 24-hour international airport and caters to diverse users including international aircraft charters, private flights, medical evacuations, maintenance, repair and overhaul services, and freighter operations.
Spanning 160 hectares, the airport is a backbone infrastructure supporting the growth and development of Seletar Aerospace Park.
When the new terminal opens, operations at the current terminal on the western side of the airport will cease and turboprop aircraft operations will be shifted from Changi to Seletar, which will help free up capacity for jet aircraft operations at Changi.
With the growing demand for air travel and increased traffic at Changi Airport, there is a need to ensure the optimisation of the use of resources within the entire aviation system in Singapore.
“Seletar Airport will continue to be a valuable complement to Changi Airport.
“The new passenger terminal building will enhance the capacity of the airport. It will strengthen Singapore aviation.
“The new investment will also enable more opportunities to thrive in Seletar Aerospace Park, reinforcing Singapore’s position as a vibrant aviation hub,” he said.
The Civil Aviation Authority oversees safety in the aviation industry, develops the air hub and aviation industry, provides air navigation services and provides aviation training for human resource development.
Lee Seow Hiang, chief executive officer of Changi Airport Group, said Seletar Airport has seen upgrades to various airside facilities in recent years.
The new passenger terminal will allow the country to better cater to the specific needs of the airport’s different users and provide a more seamless travel experience.
Changi Airport Group manages Changi, the second civilian airport, which handled a record 55.4 million passenger movements last year.
It also manages and invests |in foreign airports through its |subsidiary, Changi Airports International.
