DEmark Concept Store Brings Thai Design to the World Stage

From award pedestal to shop floor, 61 winning designs prove Thai creativity can rival the world's best brands in quality and craft

  • The Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) has launched the DEmark Concept Store, a retail showcase at Siam Discovery featuring 61 award-winning Thai designs.
  • The store's collection aims to prove that Thai creativity can rival global brands by featuring products that blend local craftsmanship and heritage with a modern, international design sensibility.
  • The primary goal is to transition these designs from award recognition to commercial success, positioning them as genuine competitors on the international market and boosting Thailand's creative economy.

From award pedestals to shop floors, 61 winning designs prove Thai creativity can rival the world's best brands in quality and craft.

Walk past the espresso machine with its retro-chic curves, the woven bag modelled on a weaver ant's nest, or the lamp shaped like Wat Arun's prang, and it becomes hard to tell where Thai craftsmanship ends and international design sensibility begins.

That, in essence, is the point of the DEmark Concept Store, a new retail showcase opening this month at Siam Discovery that aims to prove Thai design does not simply deserve a trophy — it deserves a place on the shelf beside the world's leading labels.

Organised by the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), under the Ministry of Commerce, the store runs from 11 to 20 August at Creative Space on the third floor of Siam Discovery, under the theme "Unveil the Future of Thai Design".

It brings together 61 works that won this year's Design Excellence Award, known as DEmark, spanning eight categories from furniture and lifestyle goods to packaging, graphics and digital platforms.

What is striking, wandering the aisles, is the sheer range of ambition. Mother Goose's Archie Bed, an upholstered daybed with a tailored, boutique-hotel finish, sits not far from Curvix, a sculptural wooden stool by Kenkoon ex that folds timber into rhythmic waves worthy of a design gallery.

Both were shortlisted for the Prime Minister's Export Award, a sign that judges see genuine export potential rather than mere craft-fair charm.

The lifestyle category tells its own story of heritage reimagined. New Arriva's Malai Collection reworks the Thai floral garland into wearable jewellery, while its Baitong Pinto Tiffin Box updates the banana-leaf food carrier for a design-conscious kitchen.

Nearby, Wat Arun's silhouette resurfaces twice — as a diffuser set and as a table lamp — proof that a Bangkok landmark can be distilled into objects with genuine sculptural presence rather than souvenir-shop kitsch.

Elsewhere, Thai design shows it can be quietly technical as much as visually arresting. Thai Airways' After Altitude bag, made from decommissioned aircraft seat covers, picked up the Social Impact award for turning aviation waste into a smart laptop case.

In the industrial and IoT category, the MiniMex "La Moon" espresso machine — with its brushed-steel, mid-century styling — stands comfortably alongside imported café equipment costing many times more.

Accessories tell a similarly confident story. The Weaver Ant Nest Bag, woven to resemble the tightly bound leaf nests found in Thai forests, and KNOT, an apparel line built around traditional binding techniques, both demonstrate how indigenous materials and motifs can be translated into pieces with real fashion week polish.

In packaging, SCG's Beerlao Green paper can dispenser reduces plastic in a category rarely associated with sustainable innovation, while Farmgroup's minimalist box for Yugen Eau de Parfum would not look out of place on a Parisian perfume counter.

The graphic and communication design group — the largest at the awards, with 44 winning entries — ranges from corporate identity work for pharmacies and credit cards to a typeface inspired by Islamic calligraphy and a yearbook documenting the awards themselves.

Interior design winners, meanwhile, include the reworked heritage shophouse now housing Siam Societies restaurant and the interiors of Andaz One Bangkok, both signalling that Thai designers are shaping some of the country's most talked-about hospitality spaces.

Even the newest category, System Service & Digital Platform, is represented, with an AI tool for architects and an app that pairs elderly users with reliable companions for errands and outings.

Surinthorn Sunthornsanan

Surinthorn Sunthornsanan, DITP's Deputy Director-General, said during the opening ceremony of the concept store on Friday that the DEmark Award reflects how good design can create value, generate business opportunities and help Thai products compete internationally.

DITP, he added, sees itself as a vehicle for propelling the country's creative output into high-potential businesses that contribute meaningfully to the economy.

That ambition is precisely why the concept store matters. A trophy on a shelf is one thing; a product on a shopper's arm, wrist or kitchen counter is another.

By placing DEmark-winning furniture, jewellery, packaging and tech side by side in a working retail environment, DITP is inviting the public to judge Thai design not as a cultural curiosity but as a genuine commercial rival to established global brands – and to buy into that story directly.

For designers and the small companies behind many of these works, the exposure at Siam Discovery offers something awards ceremonies rarely can: direct feedback from paying customers and a chance to test whether ideas that impressed a judging panel can also win over a shopper weighing up a purchase.

DITP has framed the store as more than an exhibition: a platform connecting designers, entrepreneurs and consumers and a mechanism for turning recognition into revenue and a stronger competitive footing at home and abroad.

By commercialising these creative ventures in this way, DITP hopes to elevate brand visibility, build long-term export partnerships, and contribute to the sustainable expansion of Thailand's creative economy.

DITP is now inviting business leaders, trade representatives, entrepreneurs and design enthusiasts to explore the potential of Thai commercial design and support local creators at the DEmark Concept Store, open until 20 August 2026 at Creative Space, third floor, Siam Discovery — a chance, the department says, to discover the future of Thai design and back it with a purchase.
