Local movie industry expects stagnant revenue growth in

THE THAI film industry is expected to see flat revenue growth this year on par with last year’s Bt650 million, according to GDH 559, a movie-production company.

Jina Osothsilp, chief executive officer of GDH 559, said yesterday that the economic slowdown and gloomy public sentiment following the death of His Majesty the King were key concerns this year and for coming years. So she said the company was being cautious.
When it came to the overall film industry, total ticket sales in the first 10 months were Bt3.677 billion, of which 36 Thai films accounted for 12 per cent or Bt467 million.
There were only two films, namely “Luang Pee Jazz 4G” and “Fan Day”, that made more than Bt100 million.
Only one movie earned between Bt50 million and Bt99 million in revenue, while five movies generated between Bt10 million and Bt49 million. Six films made between Bt1 million and Bt9 million.
“Interestingly, 22 local movies earned revenue of less than Bt1 million,” Jina said.
In the remaining months of the year, three local movies – “Suddenly Twenty”, “A Gift” and “I Love You Two” – will be screened. “Suddenly Twenty”, a romantic comedy, is co-produced by CJ Major and M Pictures. “A Gift” was made by GDH 559 and “I Love You Two” is produced by M39.
“We hope that those three new movies can stimulate overall ticket sales of local films to hit the same level as last year,” Jina said.
Last year, 54 local films created total ticket sales of Bt650 million.
Asked about next year’s plan, the chief of GDH 559 said her company was preparing three quality film line-ups – a teen movie in March, a horror film in October and a romantic comedy in December.
To support its business partner, the company plans to produce two TV series for the GMM 25 digital channel.
