Tourism Dept moves promptly to address tourism complaints

THE TOURISM Department will liaison with both the public and private sector to propose plans to improve tourism infrastructure on the resort island of Phuket.

Wanasiri Morakul,, director-general of the department, travelled to the southern province recently to investigate complaints by tourism entrepreneurs following instructions from Tourism Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul.
A fact-finding committee from the department recently met with the governor and high-ranking provincial officials to investigate grievances and petitions from local tourism entrepreneurs about major problems and obstacles that need to be tackled urgently.
As the island province is one of Thailand’s most popular destinations for tourists from both abroad and within the country, issues of inconvenience in law enforcement and tourism services have emerged.
Wanasiri and Pol Maj General Prasert Ngernyuang, commander of Tourist Police, attended a meeting with Governor Chokchai Detamornthan at Phuket City Hall.
In the evening, Wanasiri called another meeting with representatives from the local private sector, including the presidents of the Phuket Provincial Tourism Council and Phuket Tourism Business Association, and local tourism businesses.
He was given information and insights on problems that obstructed their business operations.
The meeting sought solutions to the problems and ways to prevent future misunderstandings that may harm the tourism image of Phuket and the country.
“Both the government and the private sectors in Phuket agreed upon the plan to reallocate and rezone the province for tourism-related activities depending on popularity.
“The meeting also agreed on a plan to develop more tourist guides who speak certain languages that the province lacks, and a plan to accelerate the renovation of Phuket International Airport to provide a higher level of convenience for visiting tourists.
“The information, results and agreements reached at the meeting will be reported to Tourism Minister Kobkarn and Deputy Prime Minister Tanasak Patimapragorn for further guidance.”
