Ministry plans Mae Sot-Myanmar special economic zone

Thailand’s commerce minister has announced that a Thailand-Myanmar joint working group will set up a special economic zone along the border in Tak province.

A public-private join venture will work through details for a “retail and wholesale centre” in the economic zone.

Commerce minister Apiradi Tantraporn said on Monday that the retail and wholesale centre is one component of the Bt90 billion investment to create the Mae Sot Special Economic Zone by 2021.

The investment would help boost trade between the two countries to Bt300 billion in the year 2021, she said.

It is also the pilot project for plans to create additional special economic zones along borders with other neighbouring countries, Apiradi said.
