Thailand prepares for 15,000 delegates at IMF-World Bank meetings

Thailand is preparing to host more than 15,000 delegates at the 2026 IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok from October 12–18.

Thailand is preparing to take centre stage as host of the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group, scheduled for October 12–18 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in Bangkok.

Behind the high-profile event is a large-scale preparation effort involving the Finance Ministry, the Bank of Thailand and other agencies, which are working together to welcome more than 15,000 participants, including economic policymakers and senior executives from leading financial institutions around the world.

Preparations follow strict international standards

Vinit Visessuvanapoom, Director-General of the Fiscal Policy Office (FPO), outlined the detailed preparations required to meet the standards set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Group.

The organisations impose strict operational and security requirements covering everything from the placement of electrical sockets on conference tables and ventilation systems to room dimensions, waste bins and event-management procedures, all set out in manuals running to hundreds of pages.

Security and transport planning also requires close coordination with senior police officials.

More than 200 electric vehicles are being prepared for senior delegates, supported by dedicated charging infrastructure built specifically for the event. The arrangements are intended to ensure transparent and equal treatment under international standards.

With heavy traffic expected in central Bangkok, the Cabinet has designated Friday, October 16, 2026, as a special public holiday for Bangkok.

Thai identity incorporated into the event

Organisers also plan to showcase Thai culture and local knowledge throughout the meetings.

Locally woven fabrics from communities across the country will be used as acoustic panels in conference rooms, accompanied by information about their origins.

There will also be areas displaying community and Royal Project products, while Thai massage services will be available for visiting delegates.

From an economic perspective, spending by participants is expected to generate income for domestic businesses, including construction companies, service providers, more than 21 hotels and tourism-related businesses in central Bangkok, from Pathumwan and Silom to Thong Lor.

Thailand seeks greater global visibility

Hosting the meetings is also being viewed as an opportunity for Thailand to gain greater international exposure, with major global media organisations expected to focus on Bangkok throughout the conference week.

Officials see the event as a platform for Thailand, as a medium-sized open economy, to strengthen its profile internationally and highlight its role as a middle power.

Vinit said Thailand would use the meetings to advance issues that reflect both global challenges and the priorities of developing economies through four main pillars.

The first is Digital Public Infrastructure, highlighting Thailand’s PromptPay system and seamless digital payment infrastructure as examples of successful digital development.

The second is Climate Resilience, focusing on fiscal policies and new financial tools to address the challenges posed by climate change.

The third, Creating Jobs & Empowering People, will focus on job creation and preparing workers and economies for challenges arising from artificial intelligence and technological change.

The fourth is Aging Society, covering preparations for ageing populations and longer life expectancy.

The 2026 IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings will therefore serve as a major test of Thailand’s capacity to host a global event while providing an opportunity to showcase the country’s economic priorities, cultural identity and role in the international community.
