Thailand is hosting the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group from Monday (October 12, 2026) to Sunday (October 18, 2026), with many sectors contributing to the country’s duties as host.
These include providing the highest level of security for global financial leaders and more than 15,000 participants from 191 countries.
Many of those on duty arrive before proceedings begin and leave after they end each day.
They include Labrador retriever police dogs, known as K-9s.
The K-9s carry out their duties in the morning and evening.
Morning checks take place before proceedings begin, while evening checks are conducted after the day’s meetings have ended and participants have left the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center.
Police dogs patrol the meeting venue and search for suspicious objects.
Security checks also cover key hotels accommodating global financial leaders.
On Saturday (October 17, 2026), two K-9s named Blackbird and Nami were deployed to patrol the venue.
Both are second-class police dogs, with first class being the highest rank.
They have served for seven years and have experience checking many important sites.
Around six police dogs are serving the country on rotating shifts at the IMF–World Bank meetings.
The shifts are arranged to safeguard their welfare, allowing enough rest and preventing excessive fatigue as they carry out duties at the large meeting venue.
However, while patrolling on Saturday (October 17, 2026), Blackbird became a little fussy and stopped working by a door used for both entry and exit. Staff explained that the dog was insisting on having a treat.
