CP Group and AWS Unveil Five-Year Plan to Position Thailand as Regional AI Hub

 

CP Group, Arise Ventures, True, and AWS commit to a five-year alliance to train three million Thais and accelerate economic growth through artificial intelligence.

 

Thailand’s largest conglomerate and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have launched a five-year, five-pillar roadmap aimed at transforming Thailand into Southeast Asia’s primary artificial intelligence (AI) hub through private investment, hyperscale infrastructure, and mass workforce training.

 

Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group), Arise Ventures Group, True Corporation, and AWS announced the collaboration on Wednesday under the banner of the "Thailand AI National Mission", framing the initiative as a national undertaking to lift competitiveness during a defining technological shift.

 

 

Suphachai: Thailand Must Become an AI 'Maker,' Not Just a User

Suphachai Chearavanont, Senior Vice Chairman of CP Group, Chairman and CEO of Arise Ventures Group, and Chairman of True Corporation, argued that Thailand risks falling behind unless it rapidly develops a domestic AI value chain rather than merely consuming foreign technology.

 

Citing global competitiveness rankings that place Thailand roughly 26th overall and near 30th in GDP, Suphachai noted that the next five years will determine whether the country closes the gap with regional peers.

 

Pointing to World Bank projections of 2.2% annual global growth over the coming decade, he emphasised that widespread AI adoption could significantly boost productivity and living standards.
 

 

 

Suphachai set out five national strategic priorities:

 

Hyperscale Computing Base: Expanding Thailand's data centre capacity toward 10 gigawatts across roughly 10 provinces over five years—representing up to 3 trillion baht ($87 billion) in cumulative investment—to attract semiconductor leaders such as TSMC and SK Hynix.

 

Startup Ecosystem: Building an entrepreneurial pipeline by mobilising university students into thousands of "simulated startups", drawing inspiration from Singapore's venture-capital matching schemes.

 

Global Talent Destination: Positioning Thailand as an attractive base for international AI researchers through competitive personal tax incentives and quality-of-life programmes.

 

Workforce Pipeline: Expanding direct university-industry partnerships to train high-level local technical talent.

 

Ethics & Governance: Pairing technological expansion with clear frameworks for data security, AI ethics, accountability, and transparent digital governance.

 

"AI is the new infrastructure that will drive global transformation at a speed greater than the internet era," Suphachai said, adding that the mission aligns with a broader goal of equipping 20 million citizens with basic AI readiness.

 

 

 

AWS Expands Multi-Billion-Dollar Regional Footprint

Jaime Valles, Vice President and Managing Director for Asia Pacific, Japan, and China at AWS, framed the partnership as an extension of Amazon's long-term regional commitments.

 

AWS has already committed more than $5 billion in Thailand over 15 years through its Bangkok cloud region—an investment projected to add $10 billion to GDP and support over 11,000 jobs annually.
 

 

 

Valles noted that while global enterprise AI investment will run into trillions of dollars by 2029, workforce skills remain the ultimate bottleneck.

 

With an estimated 74% of Thailand's workforce currently lacking AI expertise, the alliance aims to bridge the gap by training three million people, scaling up an AWS programme that has trained 120,000 Thais since 2017.

 

"We're bringing the full breadth of AWS's cloud and AI capabilities to help transform how Thailand builds, innovates, and prospers," Valles said.

 

 

 

Concrete Deployments: From Telecom to Retail

Beyond overarching goals, the corporate partners detailed specific operational integrations:

 

Telecommunications & Satellites: True Corporation will transition to an AI-first operating model on AWS for predictive maintenance, while exploring satellite broadband via Amazon’s Project Kuiper to reach underserved remote communities.

 

Fintech: Ascend Money will deploy AI-driven credit scoring on AWS to widen financial access for underbanked populations.

 

Retail Operations: CP Group will expand its AI Center of Excellence across more than 19,000 retail outlets (including 7-Eleven, Lotus's, and Makro) to run computer-vision store monitoring and demand forecasting using tools such as Amazon Q.

 

Open Innovation: The "AI FOR ALL" hackathon will invite Thais aged 18 and older to prototype generative AI applications for healthcare, agriculture, and education.

 

 

Resource Constraints and Global Competition

Executives acknowledged clear operational challenges. Suphachai warned that GPU costs have risen nearly fivefold amid global semiconductor shortages, while scaling data centres will require significantly more clean energy capacity than Thailand has currently committed.

 

Both Suphachai and Valles cited the regional skills gap—where Thailand trails peers like Singapore in AI professionals per capita—as the primary constraint on execution speed.

 

Closing the presentation, Sigve Brekke, Group CEO of True Corporation and Executive Chair of Tech, Telco, and Digital Business at Arise Ventures Group, emphasised the scale of the commitment:

 

"This is a five-year commitment to drive five game-changing AI strategies for Thailand," Brekke said, reiterating pillars focused on retail transformation, financial access, sovereign infrastructure, and workforce development governed by Responsible AI standards.

 

Addressing whether the plan can realistically deliver results, Brekke noted that no single company can tackle global technological shifts alone: "This is what partnership is about—one plus one is more than two."
