PM assigns red shirts to deal with protests

The prime minister has instructed officials to launch a proactive campaign so people's grievances can be promptly addressed and has told red-shirt members to pre-empt any protests.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra gave Prasit Chaiviratana, deputy secretary-general to the prime minister, the job of leading the panel in charge of the campaign, deputy government spokesman Anusorn Eiamsa-ard said.

Anusorn added that he and other red-shirt supporters, who are currently office-holders at Government House, would also be part of Prasit's panel.

The committee is tasked with proactively addressing the plight of the people instead of waiting for problems to arise, he said. Unlike the previous practice of just acknowledging complaints, the panel will ensure that speedy action is taken to tackle the grievances, he said.

Anusorn added that the premier believes the public will not have any reason to protest once their problems have been dealt with promptly.

This week dozens of villagers from the Northeast have been camping out near Government House demanding for land to farm on.
