The season's 12th typhoon was travelling northward slowly off the coast Sanin as of 9 am (0000 GMT) after making its way across western  , the agency said.

Officials said the storm had sustained winds of 72 kilometres per hour and gusts of 108 kilometres per hour.

The slow-moving typhoon made landfall on the south-western island of Shikoku Saturday morning.

Some 1,900 homes were inundated in eastern and western Japan and about 38,845 households in seven prefectures suffered power outages, NHK reported.//DPA
