Tokyo - The number of confirmed dead from Typhoon Talas rose to 20, after the weather system dumped record rainfall across Japan, local news reported Sunday.

Around 50 people remain missing, the Kyodo News service reported, while flooding and mudslides reported in western Japan. The number of victims could rise, especially in the region of Kii peninsula, south of Osaka.

One woman died and seven people were missing after two houses were swept away by a swollen river in Totsukawa village, Nara prefecture, Saturday night. A 73-year-old man was killed by a mudslide in the same village, broadcaster NHK said.

Authorities urged tens of thousands of households to evacuate in many areas as more rain was expected.

Since Tuesday, more than 1,800 millimetres of rainfall had been dumped in Kamikitayama village, Nara prefecture, which was about two thirds of the area's annual precipitation, NHK said.

Rainfall of 50-70 millimetres per hour was forecast for some areas in the Kinki and Tokai regions Sunday, the agency said.

The season's 12th typhoon was travelling north-north-east at 15 kilometres per hour over the waters off the Sea of Japan coast as of 6pm (0900 GMT) after making its way across western Japan overnight, the agency said.

The storm had sustained winds of 72 kilometres per hour and gusts of1 08 kilometres per hour, the agency said.

The slow-moving typhoon made landfall on the south-western island of Shikoku Saturday morning.

Thirty-nine homes were destroyed in the Kinki area and 3,481 homes were flooded in eastern and western Japan while 29,098 households in five prefectures suffered power outages, NHK reported.//DPA
