Body of drowned soldier found

The body of a soldier missing since his boat sank on Friday during flood-prevention efforts on the Chao Phraya River in Nakhon Sawan was found yesterday.

Sgt-Major First Class Wasan Thannithi, 58, was among a group of soldiers working on a boat ferrying sandbags for use in the construction of a flood barrier.

Wasan's superior officer, Maj-General Phijit Laksanalamai, commander of the 31st Military Circle, said the unit has proposed a posthumous promotion of Wasan to the rank of colonel, and that his family would be compensated accordingly.

Wasan's family would also receive a pension and life insurance payments, along with other forms of financial compensation.

Nakhon Sawan Municipality has already awarded some money to the family.

Wasan's body was found 300 metres from where the boat sank. The boat was salvaged by the military unit.
