“The contribution is made available through the EU's Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department, ECHO,” according to an EU press release issued Friday.
Ambassador David Lipman, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Thailand, said: “With this funding, the European Union will support the ongoing emergency response here in Thailand. We are now working hard with relief agencies active on the ground, including non- governmental organizations, UN bodies, and the Red Cross, to turn this EU funding into tangible relief work for those affected.”
Lipman will visit the Flood Relief Operations Centre to present the EU contribution on Monday.
According to the statement, the EU funding will be used to buy flat bottom boats, non-food relief items, drinking water and floating latrines.
“The EU contribution to the relief effort comes after ECHO has worked with its implementing partners to assess the impact of the floods and establish the most pressing needs in the relief effort.
The contribution for Thai flood relief is part of a regional EU emergency response package worth EUR 10 million, or about Bt400 million.
Between 500,000 and 1 million people in Thailand, Cambodia, Lao PDR, the Philippines and Vietnam are expected to benefit from the assistance.
