UNESCO experts to survey flood-damaged ancient sites in Ayutthaya

Four experts from the UNESCO will survey the flood-damaged ancient sites of Ayutthaya this week, Fine Arts Department director-general Somsuda Leeyavanich said Monday.

The two experts from Japan (one for water management and the other for ancient site restoration), one expert for wall painting from Italy and one expert for water management from Holland would join with the UNESCO Thailand in surveying and restoring the flood-damaged ancient sites. They would study ancient site restoration in Bangkok before inspecting the Ayutthaya World Heritage Sites such as the Portuguese Village, the Phom Phet fortress, Wat Chaiwattanaram and the Reclining Buddha of Wat Lokayasutharam within the Ayutthaya Historic Park from November 30 to December 1.
The information by the experts as well as those by Fine Arts Department officials and Thai engineers would be analysed to find solutions and restoration guideline for each ancient site, she said.
