A civil defence volunteer was killed in a clash between security officials and three insurgents in Yala's Raman district yesterday.
Officials followed a trail of blood left by the insurgents after the 10minute firefight but did not find them. The officials believed the muchwanted Tulla Haleng Yamasak, alias Imam Jakwa, may have been among the insurgents. Tulla has been active in the Jakwa area of the district.
Yaya Dama was shot in the chest during the gunfight and died of his wounds on the way to a hospital. The shootout occurred after a security perimeter was established at a village in the area at dawn following a tipoff that the insurgents were present.
