Anwar, 64, is charged with sodomizing a former male aide in June 2008, an allegation he has fiercely denied and claims is part of a government set-up to try to topple him.
A conviction would bar Anwar from politics for five years and prevent him from leading his three-party opposition in general elections expected early next year.
The opposition deprived the government of the two-thirds majority required to legislate in Parliament and won leadership of five of the country's 13 states in March 2008 elections. //DPA
