CMU students in competition final

A social business plan drawn up by Chiang Mai University's MBA students is among 13 finalists out of 64 teams from Southeast Asia and Oceania universities.

The finalists will face off in the Global Social Venture Competition from March 16-18 at Bangkok’s Thammasat University, CMU business centre director Chaiwuth Tangsomchai said yesterday.
CMU’s “Be Fresh Pack-aging Co” team presented Sa paper products to protect fruit during transport called FreshSheet and FreshBlock. The idea is based on Chiang Mai’s local process of Sa paper-making – adding substances to make anti-fungi paper that also slows down fruit’s ripening process.

The products help create jobs in the San Khamphaeng district’s Sa paper-making villages. They also lessen the burning of rice straw and cornstalks, reduce the use of foam and plastic, and save transportation costs as the fruit can be transported by ship instead of by plane.
