Over 20,000 villages hit by drought

More than 20,000 villages in the country are suffering from drought, as the amount of water at many large dams has now stood at less than half of their capacity.

Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department (DPMD) director general Wiboon Sanguanpong Wednesday said 21,939 villages in 37 provinces were now declared droughthit zones.
These provinces, he said, were located in the North, the Northeast, the Central region, and the East.
“Drought victims can call 1784 for help round the clock,” Wiboon said.
The Royal Irrigation Department said large dams the country had now contained 44,310 million cubic metres of water but of it, just 30 per cent could be used.
