Phuket Governor Tri Akaradecha said he received many requests to stage concerts for workers from Myanmar in several locations on the island. But because of security difficulties, he had to cancel all events.
“The concerts would bring thousands of Myanmar workers together. This could cause fights and it’s hard to control the Myanmar audiences. So we have to prevent it by not allowing the concerts,” Tri said.
A concert for ethnic Mon from Myanmar scheduled to be held at Thungthong market was dropped for the same reason.
Workers from Myanmar are the main migrant labourers in Thailand, but concern about staging concerts for them is not unusual, officials said.
