Scores of aftershocks rattle Italy quake area

Rome - Twenty four hours after an earthquake struck the northern Italian region of Reggio Emilia, the death toll on Wednesday stood at 16 while one person was reported missing, officials said.

The area, which had also been hit by an earthquake 10 days ago, continued to shake overnight with about 41 aftershocks registered.

An estimated 350 people were injured in Tuesday's 5.8-magnitude quake, and about 10,000 were homeless.

"Many people, even if their houses are not damaged, are just too afraid to return home," said Franco Gabrielli, chief of the civilprotection agency.//DPA
