Apple fined millions for misleading claims about iPad

Sydney - An Australian court fined Apple Inc 2.25 million Australian dollars (2.29 million US dollars) Thursday for misleading consumers by claiming its latest iPad was compatible with the country's next-generation 4G broadband network.
Apple deliberately misled the public in claiming its "iPad with WiFi + 4G" could connect directly to the Australian mobile data network, the judge of the Melbourne Federal Court ruled.
The Australian branch had deliberately misled the public at the behest of the US-based parent company, to keep with a worldwide slogan, the court ruled.
"Conduct of that kind is serious and unacceptable," the court's Justice Mordecai Bromberg said.
The iPad is not compatible with the wavelength of the mobile data network rolled out in Australia since September, which is different to the wavelength used in other parts of the world.//DPA
