Tough new laws on drunk driving

Justice Ministry spokesperson Reunwadi Suwanmongkol yesterday warned suspected drunk drivers who refuse to take alcohol breath tests about tougher punishments under new traffic laws.

They provide for up to one year in jail and/or a Bt10,000-Bt20,000 fine. The previous punishment was a Bt1,000 fine.
The draft amendment, already approved by the Cabinet on Tuesday, allows police to stop suspicious motorists, check drivers by walking a straight line, and have drivers take an alcohol breath test. If drivers refuse to be tested, police can assume them to be drunk, she explained.
