Phra Athikran Sanong Katapunyo, aka Luangpor Sanong, the abbot of Nonthaburi’s Wat Sangkhathan and founder of Sangkhathantham radio station, died of kidney disease on Friday night at the age of 68, while on Buddhist Lent retreat at Suphan Buri’s Katapunyo Dhamma Centre.
Luangpor Sanong’s body was moved to Wat Sangkhathan for a bathing ceremony, while his disciples were discussing the funeral details.
Luangpor Sanong, who was born on April 5, 1944, in Suphan Buri’s Sam Chuk district and was ordained as monk on April 29, 1964, was a student of Luang Phu Sangwal Kemako of Wat Thun Samakkhitham in Suphan Buri. He devoted his life to propagating Buddhism and teaching meditation to the public; he founded the Sangkhathantham radio station to promote Lord Buddha’s teachings (FM89.25MHz in Thai and FM89.75MHz in English).
