Tsunami warning after powerful earthquake off Philippines

Manila/Berlin - A 7.9-magnitude earthquake on Friday struck off the eastern Philippines, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning and order mass evacuations.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake's epicentre was located 109 kilometres east of Guiuan town in Eastern Samar province, at a depth of 33 kilometres. It struck at 1247 GMT.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially issued a tsunami warning for Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, and the Philippines. It later lifted the warning for Japan and Taiwan.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology ordered evacuations for residents living near the shore in six provinces on the country's eastern coast.
"Everyone must move now, quickly but don't panic," said Jane Punongbayan, a scientist at the institute. "They need to go to higher grounds, better if they are located 10 metres or higher."//DPA
